Schedule for DECEMBER FINALS and HOLIDAY Exodus 2014

Dear Parents and Students,

We'll leave soon for our first Holiday break of the fall - Thanksgiving. I wanted to send the current plan for our finals in December. Teachers will be giving finals during the final week of December and students should plan to attend each day of finals. At MHS we use midterm and finals data to inform our instruction and determine how well students have learned. These are our summative assessments and they are composed of major learning objectives identified by teachers at MHS. I appreciate parental support for ensuring students have a good breakfast each morning, spend time studying after school for their scheduled finals and ensuring students are in bed at the reasonable hour of 10 pm or sooner each night - with no electronic distractions such as phones or computers.

At MHS we are focused on student success and we appreciate your support for your son or daughter. Our finals schedule is listed below, probably a good item to post to the "hub" of information in your home - most likely the refrigerator door :) As a final piece, we would appreciate your support in communicating to your son or daughter that finals are important.

So much to be Thankful for at MHS...

Hi Everyone,

Every community has a hub. In my view, our schools are the hub and our high school is where the community focus turns most of the time within the school district because the end result of all the work of parents, coaches, teachers and administrators dwell here...the students of MHS. Students are ending their K-12 "careers" and getting ready to launch...the final countdown to their adult lives is close to beginning. At MHS we benefit from all the labors of pre-K teachers, elementary teachers aides, lunch ladies, nurses, counselors, custodial crews putting their labors into keeping kids first.

I'm so proud of the young adults we are privileged to guide at the end of their K-12 careers. They're a solid reflection of our community and all the effort of adults to guide them well. I'm thankful to be a part of the group of adults that get the privilege to guide young people in our community. To me, there is no higher calling than to serve others by focusing your lifework on serving others. We can find so many people who are meandering and seeking to find their calling, to refine their talents to serve -- I'm thankful we have so many teachers and support staff at MHS willing to serve in guiding them, it makes such a difference to so many lives for so many years to come.

I've shared our November board report below. Many things we have accomplished at MHS over the past years have focused on creating an encouraging culture for teachers, staff and students. We continue to grow.

I encourage you to read the Growl from this past week- an informative article about our math department by our student Michaela Grubb can be found there. Our math department has been focused on student learning by adding extra tutoring opportunities and identifying learning targets all students should achieve to mastery for later success in math. The department is leading the way in making math grades a better reflection of learning and focusing on students addressing their deficient areas so no learning is lost.

Be thankful for your teachers at MHS. They are making a difference for young people.

Academics - What have we learned?

Dr. Terry Robinson, Principal
All classes gave midterm assessments this past month. We continue to refine assessments to measure what was taught to students and inform our teaching practices. Teachers perform analyses to determine areas students are struggling and make adjustments when needed. They also note areas of strength for students. The English department provided a brief synopsis below noting student improvement on high school English standards (informed by the Missouri Learning Standards and ACT’s College and Career Readiness Standards). Last year they fully adopted an ACT-like format for all midterms. Other teachers have also included noteworthy co-curricular student achievements. It is my firm belief our co-curricular activities are strong part of our overall educational experience at MHS. Finally, the math department continues to see the number of Fs decrease. At the time of this report, the number of failing grades had been reduced by 38% and we adjusted our seminars to ensure all math teachers are available every seminar to assist students - we’ve gone from three teachers to all five now available during seminar.
Jennifer Silver - MHS English Department Chair
We have reviewed our first semester mid-term data and compared it to last year’s data.  We have made significant improvements. Last year’s department midterm student average was in the 40% range. This year the department average is in the 70% range. The students are becoming more accustomed to the ACT-like format and as a department we are refining how we teach essential content to yield better results. Ms. Ford led the way for our department with her sophomore class having an 83% mid-term assessment average. In addition, Mr. Clow reported he attended the break out session presented by the Wright City assistant superintendent - David Buck. During the session the presenter recommended the same format that we are already using as a department for testing students (ACT/EOC format).
Mrs. Sara Given - Speech and Theater Congratulations to the MHS Speech team on another successful Saturday at School of the Osage!  Our small team of 8 this week represented well with fantastic scores and 3 medalists.  Please Congratulate Brooke Ransom 4th Place Original Oratory, Abigail Hoer 5th Place Radio Speaking and Terran Bealmear 6th Place Dramatic Interp.  Way to go Mexico! The Vocal Music and Theatre Departments are collaborating on another musical.  “When in Rome” will go into production on Friday, November 21, Saturday, November 22 and Sunday November 23. Tickets are $10 for Adults and $5.00 for students 12th grade and under.  “When in Rome” is a musical comedy that features zany characters, upbeat music and an adventurous plot. Anyone wearing a Roman costume to the production will be discounted $2 on their ticket price.
Ms. Kendra Allen - FFA Sponsor
The Mexico FFA Chapter has had a few successes over the last week.
American Degree recipients at National Convention: Sarah Smith, Nick Stumpe, Kylie Sargent
The American Degree is the highest degree a member can earn in our organization.  To obtain such an honor it takes hard work and dedication.  Please congratulate the above members on their achievement!!
On November 4th at the Area 4 Fall Public Speaking Contest we had three contestants.  Lauren Ransom - 3rd Place Alt in Cattlemen's Division, Shelby Allen - 4th Place in Sheep Division, Kymberlynn Tessman- 2nd Place & Moving on to Districts in Pet Breeders Division
Mr. Robert Cortez - Band
Congratulations to Allison Heckman, clarinet player for the Mexico High School Band.  Allison successfully auditioned for the highest Northeast Missouri All-District Band at Moberly High School on Saturday, November 8. Allison was one of almost 400 students who auditioned for a spot in the band, and is now eligible to Audition for the All-State Band this December.  The Northeast Missouri All-District and Honorable Mention Bands will hold their concert at Moberly High School on Saturday, January 10.

Mr. Garry Hagedorn - American Government/AP American Government
Current Event: students have been actively reviewing the results of Tuesday's state and national elections by reviewing the outcome and exploring the potential motivations behind the final voting including the ramifications of the change in the majority party of the Senate, as well as targeted state issues. Content:  students are currently reading the Constitution in its entirety, and applying the 4-2-1 Collaborative Learning Model to their studies.
AP American Government:  In addition to current events and content topics listed above, AP Gov students are prepping for a "Politics and the Media" unit which includes creating a data/statistics-based study of mainstream and non-traditional news media and their role in politics.
Science, Key Club and Youth in Government - Mrs. Christine Beshears
Earth Science: We set up an erosion lab east of the lake. The students are studying topography, land movement, and learning basic mapping skills.

Key Club: The Rake and Run was a huge success - one house netted 33 bags of leaves. The Socks for Tots project was also completed this week with delivery planned for 11/8 - this was a joint effort with Columbia Key Clubbers to provide hand made non-slip socks for the Children's Hospital. The Personal Product Drive is under way and will be presented to the Help Center - we are providing items that can not be purchased with federal food cards.
Youth In Government: The State Convention will be held 11/11-11/13 in Jefferson City. We have 40 students from MHS, MMS, St. Brendan's, and new members from the MMA, that will be attending. Special thanks for Paul Siegfried for working with the Judicial group.
Family and Consumer Science - Ms. Karen Ford
We are sending out 3 electronic babies every weekend with students, and the simulation babies are doing their job.  When the students come back to school on Monday morning, they are exhausted, tired, and not ready to have baby for now.  One mother noted on on her Facebook page that the simulation babies are great and doing their job of providing a near real life situation for her daughter related to taking care of a baby.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a national Career and Technical Student Organization that provides personal growth, leadership development, and career preparation opportunities for students in Family and Consumer Sciences education. Our MHS FCCLA met on 11/6/14 with VanFar's FCCLA.  They brought 9 officers and their teacher-sponsor Mrs. Klott. Currently MHS has 7 members of FCCLA.  VanFar's FCCLA officers talked with my students about what FCCLA is all about, how to do many tasks, jobs, and fundraisers, and about volunteering.  Our students are very excited about FCCLA and student-leadership possibilities.
MHS Student Council - Mr. Jason Clow                                                                                    On October 24th Mexico High School Student Council attended the Northeast Student Council District Meeting held at Paris High School. While there the Student Council members learned numerous leadership traits and brought back a variety of ideas to improve student engagement and involvement in our school spirit. Also they successfully ran for District President. We were voted into this position by the other 40-50 districts represented at the meeting. This was accomplished through a video (with the help of Jami Williams) highlighting the various events and activities we host and campaigning for votes from the other councils.  Dr. Robinson also added his dance moves to our video and Ms. Williams added her vocal talent. :) This means that next year in October (date- TBD) our MHS Student Council will be hosting the area meeting at MHS for over one thousand student leaders from the Northeast District.
Brad Ellebracht - Assistant Principal

September 2014: MHS loves kids! Send us more! :)

This month's post includes our MHS Board Report. This is a collaborative monthly piece I ask our faculty and staff to contribute to so your school board has an update on work being done at the high school, but I've always thought it is also helpful to everyone. A lot happens in a month in high school and we are limited to just a few pages for the report, but it should give you a good overview as well. If you ever want to see all the documents the school board reviews about schools in our district you can access them by downloading the AP called "EBoards". All documents can been seen by the public electronically.

Just a reminder: Homecoming Week! We hope everyone will be a part of the festivities October 3! We'll have an all school assembly on Friday October 3 and I'd love to hear from parents if they'd like to attend -- you are invited! no worries we can figure out the seating! More details to come!

Bronze Bulldog Peer-to-Peer Award for Making A Difference at MHS: Ms. Patty Swisher

Academics - What have we learned?

Dr. Terry Robinson, Principal
We have had a “Making a Difference” M.A.D. slip given from one teacher to another teacher for a few years. We used this to model what we do with student “M” tickets - promoting positive behavior. We now have a bronze bulldog “traveling trophy”. The first award comes from the principal and the winner must take notice and pass it on to the next recipient. Patty Swisher was named for her consistent dedication to help our building achieve two Bronze PBIS recognition awards and her commitment to students. She retains the bronze bulldog this month and will recognize another faculty or staff member for next month.

Collaborative department teams met these past few weeks to develop team norms and begin identifying areas for academic improvement to develop/inform their department S.M.A.R.T. goals. The math team has begun using learning targets with the expectation all students will achieve those targets at 70% or above. Students failing to meet the intended learning target are provided with additional tutoring before school, after school, during class or during seminar then retested. The math team presented their strategy to all MHS faculty on September 10.

The ASVAB test, one of several assessments that can be used under MSIP 5 to gauge college and career readiness will be provided on October 7 by the counseling department. In addition, the department is exploring additional Compass testing for students.

The PLAN and EXPLORE assessments, provided in the past by ACT and modeled after the ACT have been replaced by the ASPIRE assessment. 10th grade students will take the new ASPIRE assessment.

The faculty and administration team developed a building plan for MHS. The plan included action steps for state and national assessments, PBIS, PLC development, and targeted professional development supported at the district and building level. All members of the faculty signed on to the document signifying their commitment to continuous improvement after sufficient time to read, review and offer input. The plan will be placed on display in the main hall of MHS

Mrs. Bridget Bingham - Special Services Teacher
After the Home Management students read an article in a Scholastic magazine about Body Bullies, they decided to accepted one of the challenges the magazine explained.  It is called Operation Beautiful.  This was started to help people feel good about themselves, bring smiles to strangers and stop body bullying .  Anonymous sticky notes are put on public restroom mirrors and stalls with feel good statements, such as “ being fabulous is not what matters….what does matter is that you care about yourself.”  The students will be spreading thoughtful messages throughout the school year within the high school.

Mrs. Sara Given - Speech and Theater
In June, Sara Given was invited to the Jellybean Conspiracy Foundation (JBC) Board meeting at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City to share the Fine Arts program she created for our Special Needs students.  The "Jellybean Speech Olympics" was the first of its kind anywhere. The Foundation commended Sara and her team of high school students on their creativity and hard work and have offered to fun and manage a website for "Jellybean Speech Olympics" for a year and link it to their Internationally known Foundation site. They have also invited Sara and her Jellybeans to speak at the JBC annual fundraiser Golf Tournament October 3. The overall goal of the foundation is to help Mrs. Given make her "Speech Olympics" a Nationwide event and get Jellybeans all across the country performing in similar festivals.

The Theatre and Vocal Music Departments will be collaborating again this fall on another Musical.  "When in Rome" an upbeat, comedic play with zany characters, an unlikely love story, gladiator games, and catchy toe-tapping music. Auditions are open to all students September 8-10 and production dates are November 21-23.

Sara Given will be presenting a workshop at the Speech & Theatre Association of Missouri conference on Friday, September 26 on her work with the Special Needs Students at the Jellybean Speech Olympics.  Students Katie Lauer, Kelsay Hobbs and Nicholas Cook will be performing along with their peer coaches Sidny Groves, Delanie Jones and Riley Given. Sara will present with the help of Assistant Speech & Debate Coach Laura Loudenslager.

The Colorful World of Jellybeans
(Speech & Theatre; all levels)
"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.  Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away." - Henry David Thoreau

Welcome to the World of Jellybeans! Formed in 2001, the Jellybean Conspiracy (JBC) is a non-for-profit organization that sponsors theatre shows designed to include the talents of students with and without disabilities. Our Jellybean experience began with a performance of the first JBC script in 2013 for MSHSAA District Readers Theatre Competition. This was the start of a remarkable journey that impacted the lives of our regular education students, our students with special needs and our community as a whole. In May of 2014, with permission of JBC founder Dr. Howard Martin and Executive Director, Gabriella Lucas we hosted the first ever "Jellybean Speech Olympics", a Speech "tournament" for students with disabilities.

Come hear about our journey, meet and watch performances by some of our Jellybeans, and learn how you can get your school signed up to participate in the "Jellybean Speech Olympics" hosted by Mexico High School. We guarantee getting involved with the Jellybeans in your school will have a positive impact on your life, and the lives of your students, professionally, and personally.

MHS Social Studies
AP World History students are working on a large project using Time-Maps.  Students will follow an AP theme through 8000 years of history across over 1100+ interactive history maps, then create a presentation to their classmates explaining the Key Developments and Continuity & Change of their respective Themes.

AP American Government & Core American Government students are exploring fundamental concepts, including land-mark court cases, of American Government.  In addition, 4 person teams will be creating Presentations and Concept Maps of the Eight Principles of the Constitution for presentation to their peers and select staff.

Exploring and Creating rules !!!

Multiple Social Studies Teachers will be attending an educator conference at the National Churchill Museum on Wednesday September 10th in Fulton, MO.

MHS Social Studies will be participating in Mexico's Walk Back in Time, their program TBD.

Mrs. Jami Williams - Media and Journalism
The journalism class is implementing the Maestro approach to journalism this year. Each student is responsible for one aspect of a story making the entire project a team effort based in authentic collaboration. The 2013-2014 yearbook was once again, for the third year in a row, selected for Gallery of Excellence by Walsworth publishing; this book will also be entered into JEA/NSPA competition. Advanced Production is planning the first film festival with a target date of late April to be held at the high school and will be coordinating not only a lip dub for the high school again this year, but will also be approaching Ms. Haag about coordinating and filming one for the middle school. Ms. Williams' classroom was selected as one of the pilot classrooms to test the full Google Classroom system.

Mrs. Christine Beshears - Key Club
Key Club will be sponsoring the Fall Blood Drive in the Sports Lobby on September 17th, 10 am - 2 pm. The public is invited to donate.

Mr. Brad Ellebracht - Assistant Principal and Mrs. Patty Swisher - PBiS Coordinator
We are engaging in several strategies to influence student attendance.  These include:
  • a push to communicate attendance as being important, spearheaded by the counseling team
  • revisiting current attendance practices  and incentive programs, to ensure implementation with fidelity
  • increasing communication with families regarding student absences
  • meeting weekly (administration, attendance secretary, counselors and SRO) regarding attendance and identifying and intervening with students that have attendance issues
  • weekly monitoring and discussion of individual student attendance in seminar

Parent-teacher Conferences Sept. 23 and 24, 2014

Hi Everyone,

We've only been in school for about one month, but things seem to be at full swing at MHS. Probably the one thing foremost in my mind right now is our upcoming parent-teacher conferences. We will have two nights available for parents to meet with teachers this year: September 23 and 24, 2014 from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Teachers from your son or daughter's seminar class will contact you to set up an appointment. If you haven't been contacted yet, you can call the school at 573-581-4296 and set your own appointment with our secretarial staff - we're glad to help you. All conferences will be in the sports complex and the Gary Filbert gym.

It has been a great start to our school year and we're looking forward to seeing the families we serve on Parent-teacher conference nights.

I've attached a short video here if you need more details: (it might take a minute or two to download depending on your network speed)
